IN THIS ISSUE:

Diversify Program Efforts -- Beyond the Pool Party

Welcome to the spring edition of the Campus Advantage, "Students First," Residence Life Newsletter. Focusing on programming going on around the country, this edition offers ways to expand programming efforts and resources you can use to do your job.

Now that we are well into the Spring semester it's important to think about ways we can serve the residents through educational and developmental programming initiatives. Below are some programming categories and ideas for each. Think of ways you can meet the needs of your residents and give them experiences that will contribute to their success and growth.

Valuing Differences

International Food Night -- This is a good way to show that your property knows about and appreciates it's residents from different countries.

Themed Movie Nights -- Have movie nights that accentuate the positive aspects of different cultures.

Civic Engagement and Volunteerism:

  • Political Debates -- As nominees gear up for the 2008 elections, consider partnering with a club on campus to host a voting drive, or even a debate.
  • Communiate with your campus volunteerism department to find out how to provide your residents with opportunities to give back to the community.
  • Plan an end of the semester clothing drive or sale to benefit a local shelter or charitable organization.

Academic Success

The Major Event (Choosing a Major) -- Show your residents that living at a Campus Advantage property sets them up for success and that the employees genuinely care.

Passive Educational Programming -- Again, show you care about residents from different backrounds and cultures by examining their respective paths from an educational standpoint.

Additionally, offer residents programs focused on academic success like:

By helping them with their study issues, quality relationships will be developed. Come up with your own ways to help your residents be successful.

Life Skills

Residents will appreciate individual attention from the staff. Offer them workshops such as:

The idea is to create a community building exercise that reinforces positive lifestyle activities to residents.

Discuss this on the Facebook Forums at Facebook.com! Share what activities you are planning for this summer.

Property Updates

Around the country Campus Advantage is making efforts to not only supply excellent living conditions but provide a sense of community superior to the competition. Here are examples of how we do that:

  • Dobie Center - Austin, TX
An intramural basketball program has been started with both coed and mens teams. Consisting of 10-15 residents the teams use the University gymnasium weekly for games.
  • The Edge at 42nd- Tampa, FL
All Nations Cafe provides international residents a chance to learn English better from 7-9 p.m. every Friday.
  • The Tradition - College Station, TX
The Tradition is having a substantial Ping-Pong Tournament. This will help in relieving the mid-semester stress residents experience and help develop community.
  • Greenville Tech Foundation Student Housing - Greenville, SC
On Tuesday and Wednesday Nights GTFSH puts on a mock "American Idol" competition in their clubhouse.

Put that extra effort into your programming. It will show and your residents will take notice. Try to do something new that your residents will be excited about. Ice-cream socials, movie/game nights and open-mic nights are a couple of community building activities. For programming ideas visit the Campus Advantage website or residentassistant.com

Spring Programming

As mid-terms and Spring Break approach residents may become more anxious and overall restlessness may increase. Providing them with activities will lessen their anxiety and create a more positive enviroment. Here are some ideas:

Study Groups - To the best of your ability, povide help to residents who need it. Inform students of the different resources the College/University offers and how they can benefit from them.

Time Management - On your bulletinboards (or any means of conveyance you feel would be effective) offer ideas on time management.

Social Programming - Creating and implementing community-building programs will advocate positivity at your property. Assess the needs of your residents and create some activities you think they would enjoy doing.
